General procedure: To a solution of 15a (19.0 g, 107 mmol) in THF (300 mL) cooled to -78 C was added n-butyllithium (47.2 mL, 118 mmol, 2.5 M solution in hexane) dropwise. The resulting solution was stirred at this temperature for 20 min before the dropwise addition of propionic anhydride (15.1 mL, 118 mmol). The cooling bath was removed, and the flask was allowed to slowly warm to room temperature and stir for an additional hour whereupon LCMS indicated reaction completion. The reaction was quenched with the addition of sat. NH4Cl. Volatiles were removed in vacuo, and the resulting residue was diluted with DCM. The layers were separated, and the organic layer was washed with water x 2, 1 M NaOH, brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to afford the desired product as a white solid (23.6 g, 94% yield).
